Jerwin Ancajas to fight Jonas Sultan next

By Allan Fox, boxingnews24.com

Fresh off his win over Israel Gonzalez last Saturday night, Jerwin Ancajas will be making his next title defense of his IBF World super flyweight title against his #1 mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan in the next 4 months or so.

Ancajas (29-1-1, 20 KOs) defeated Gonzalez (21-2, 8 KOs) by a 10th round knockout in a fight shown on ESPN in the U.S at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The 26-year-old Ancajas impressed the boxing fans with his performance in knocking Gonzalez down 3 times in the fight in putting him down in round 1 and two times in round 10. Gonzalez didn’t have the best style for Ancajas to show off all punching ability the way he had in his previous match against Jamie Conlan last November. Ancajas had to go after Gonzalez to slowly break him down in a methodical manner.

The 26-year-old Sultan (14-3, 9 KOs) is also Filipino like Ancajas, and he likes to mix it up in the same way. A match-up between Sultan and Ancajas shapes up to be a war for as long as it lasts. Sultan, who goes by the nickname ‘Zorro,’ has recent wins over former IBF World flyweight champion John Riel Casimero, Sonny Boy Jaro, Makazole Tete, Tomel Oliveros and Tatsuya Ikemizu. Sultan was beaten by Go Onaga (25-2-2) by a 10 round unanimous decision in November 2015. The fight was a lot closer than the scores handed down by the 3 judges. Sultan has improved a lot since that fight.

“He’s a perfect style for Jerwin because he’s flat-footed, he’s right in front of you. Jerwin is going to look a million percent better with Sultan, who’s not a guy that moves, and he can just tee off on him. He just comes right at you,” said Ancajas’ match-maker Sean Gibbons to RingTV.com.

Ancajas looked good against Israel Gonzalez, but he can look a lot better than that with the right opponent. Sultan will take the fight to Ancajas and we’ll see which of them will come out on top. You can’t rule out a victory for Sultan, because he’s already proven himself as a high quality operator with his recent wins over Casimero and Jaro.
