Just because he already has a world title in his name doesn’t mean Milan Melindo isn’t hungry for another one.
Boxing coach Edito Villamor said the reigning IBF junior flyweight champion has been a beast in training while preparing for his title unification bout against WBA champion Ryoichi Taguchi of Japan.
“He’s ready,” said the boxing trainer shortly before Melindo’s team flew to Tokyo, Japan. “Grabe ang pinakita sa training at nakita namin iyong determination niya.”
Melindo dreams of becoming the undisputed junior flyweight champion and a victory against the taller Taguchi this New Year’s Eve is a step toward that direction.
“Sana iyong program niya mailabas namin sa ring,” said Villamor.
“Grabe ang durability ng mga Japanese fighters. In Asia sila ang may pinakamaraming world champion, Taguchi is one of them. Kaya doble, triple ang preparation namin.”
As of now, Melindo’s focus is to make the 108-pound limit. He has had serious weight issues in his previous fights, but his coach is confident they won’t have problems this time.
During the weigh-in for his title defense against South Africa’s Hekkie Budler last September, Melindo initially failed to make the weight.
He needed extra time to taper off and was able to make the 108 pound limit in the subsequent try.
